I have just been prescribed this drug to help lessen the effects of Paroxetine withdrawal (I have not commenced the treatment or the withdrawal programme yet) by my Psychiatrist. I have Bi-Polar Disorder but my Husband and I are going to try for a babba and obv. pregnancy and Paroxetine is a big no no.

What I need to know is whether Pregabalin is a fast acting drug like Librium, for example, or if it is the type of drug that you take for a few weeks before you feel the benefits, like Buspar, say.

I will be discussing all of this in-depth with my psych in the NY but i am curious in the meantime to know about this.

Does anyone know? Thanks in advance :)

Oh and Merry Christmas everyone! x

Lyrica (pregabalin) does not act like antidepressant like Paxil or a benzodiazepine like Librium (I'm surprised you have taken Librium, it is very uncommonly used).

Likely you will feel sedated (it can really knock some people out) and with that there will be some reduction of anxiety. The sedation will come on within an 20 min to 1hr. Some people do not respond to it at all. It does not really cause a feeling of being tranquil like Librium can. Lyrica has several actions and one of them is to act on the same chemical- GABA- as benzodiazepines but Lyrica does not act directly. And there is a extremely low risk of abuse with Lyrica but I have never heard of a case of abuse except in people with a severe addiction involving polysubstance abuse. Never the less it is a schedule V drug in The US.

Have you just been on the Paxil? Normally it is a very bad idea for people with bipolar to use antidepressants unless they are taken with another drug like Lamictal, Abilify, or Lithium.

And I don't know what type of bipolar you have (bipolar I or II) or how severe it has been but I would recommend you get second opinions for both psychiatry and OB/GYN if you can. Pregnancy is notorious for causing people to become unstable and becoming full blown manic or extremely depressed. It is generally considered better for a mother to take medication if the problem is severe. But Paxil is a nasty drug compared to most other antidepressants in just about every way including having some risk to the child. It is a pregnancy class D drug meaning that there is a risk but the benefits might outweigh the risk in serious situations. It is also most likely to cause antidepressant discontinuation syndrome and it is more likely to cause it to be severe. If you start up on antidepressants again you might consider something else like Prozac.

And there is a chance you will not have any discontinuation problems.

So you will not have to wait an eternity like you would with another drug but it is not as effective as a benzodiazepine most of the time.
