Question:
How can I get smarter?

I'm not asking how I can acquire more information (reading books and taking classes would easily see to that), I'm asking how I can increase my intelligence - pattern-recognition, problem-solving, etc. I've googled this and the suggestions range from breathing exercises to meditation to eating less carbs - silly stuff that would only yield an extra five IQ points at most.

I want to be able to grasp concepts currently beyond me. Let's say I wanted the equivalent of 20 extra IQ points. I know this is probably a pipe dream, but short of a brain transplant, theoretically, what could give one this kind of boost? Adderall? Stem cell therapy? However experimental or hypothetical, give me some possibilities.

You can literally exercise your brain. Get faster at pattern recognition, Better at spatial concepts, etc by playing games. Use it or lose it applies to the brain too. Start by checking out some of the games to improve memory.

Its nice to know there are people out there wanting to learn.......I AM PROUD!!!

Ah, if you want to increase your intelligence you should read many books. It depends on what KIND of knowledge you'd like to know. So lets say you wanted to know more about, well science perhaps. To learn more about science you should definitely try experiments.

I learn best by doing, or seeing for myself, something. I understand it more when I experience things instead of read it out of a boring old book. Although best ways of learning is different for everybody, this is a good suggestion.

Also problem solving and multi-step questions can help you. You will nourish your brain with more facts by spending a good amount of time doing math with numbers and stuff like that. It will keep your juices flowing!! It is good to exercise your brain a little bit everyday!!

So, in a summary of my little story(answer), I am just saying to work your brain. The more you read and write the more intelligent you will be. It also helps to have therapeutic remedies too. It is good to relax your brain also..

I hope my suggestions helped!!!

You already are. You are among the few who grasp that there are concepts that are beyond their reach at the current time. No one gets everything all at once, you have to build on knowledge gradually.

Since you really do "get it" that you have much to learn, you are way, way ahead of the pack. Your interest in continuing your knowledge acquisition will take you far.

I think it was Einstein who remarked that the difference in the man who knows least and the man who knows the most is infinitesimal compared to what is not known.

So the bottom line is: have the self discipline to avoid useless computer games and TV, concentrate on reading things that expand your knowledge, and you will be unstoppable.

You need to do activities that are stimulating to your mind... so like you said, not reading or studying. Try brain teasers.
