In January, I was rushed to a hospital for an extreme allergic reaction after I ate almonds and ran 1.5 miles.
I was first given steroids through an IV port in my hand for my hives and swelling..then I was given the benadryl..
First, awful burning sensations flowed through the veins in my arms all the way up the back of my head.
Then, I became extremely dizzy and disorientated. The nurse said this was normal, of course.
Next, I thought it was almost a hallucination.. the lights became extremely bright and the room felt like it was rushing forwards, I was horrified and anxious because I believed I was dying, and I had a very high pitched ringing in my ears. All the sounds in the room were muffled except the ringing and the lights were blinding, also, everything still felt like it was rushing forwards, as well as this strange altered state of time in which everything felt in slow motion. Also, I kept struggeling to get out of the hospital bed and repeating that I needed to use a rest room but I was so disoriented that I couldn't make it out of the bed..nor did I realize I was doing so.
I passed out cold after about 20-30 minutes of the horrible episode as one usually does on Benadryl.. and I woke up heavy and very drowsy.
My father said he was scared because he'd never seen that happen to anyone and he's brought a few family members/friends to hospitals before for allergic reactions..
The nurse described this a ''twilight feeling''.. but, is it normal? Or, did she give me too much too fast, was it a reaction with the steroids, or was it maybe even an OD on the Benadryl?
I've read that benadryl should only be administered through an IV in a series of small doses.. not One Large dose..
