Embryonic stem cell research generally involves the death of an embryo. The objection to stem cell research is basically a pro life position held in the belief that an embryo is human and should not be experimented on and killed like it is not human.

While I agree with the above answers, I just wanted to point out that Reeves was an advocate for stem cell research. He was not personally going to do any research (or participate in any, as far as I know).

most people belive embryo's to be living humans. (to each their own beliefs) but to use the stem cell from the embryo, the embryo must die, which will kill this living human (in their eyes). Kinda the same reason people oppose abortion, they believe it to be murder.
